NSW: Brendan Moran told solicitor of fear of family
SYDNEY, Feb 16 AAP - Brendan Moran, the son of health care magnate Doug Moran, appeared
to be terrified of his family two months before he committed suicide, a jury was told
today.
Solicitor Pierre Tomaszuk said he met Mr Moran through a mutual friend in late 1994
and spent much of Christmas Eve with him that year because Brendan said he had nowhere
to go.
"One thing he said over and over was 'you don't know my family, you don't understand
them, you don't know what lengths they are capable of going to'," he told the New South
Wales Supreme Court.
"Brendan appeared terrified of his family."
He also told him he was afraid for his wife and two sons because "you don't fall out
with the Moran family".
Mr Tomaszuk was giving evidence in the legal action brought by Kristina Moran, Brendan's widow.
She is suing Doug Moran, his wife Greta, son Peter, Moran Health Care Group Pty Ltd
and Doug Moran Holdings Pty Ltd, claiming they drove Brendan to commit suicide in February
1995.
Mr Tomaszuk said Brendan told him his brother Peter had tried to kill him, that he
was no longer working for the family company and that his father was suing him.
"Brendan said that while to the outside world his father called the shots and made
the decisions, he said within the family his mother really ruled the roost," he said.
Mr Tomaszuk was continuing his evidence.
