FED:Malaysia-bound deportees on hunger strike
SYDNEY, Aug 6 AAP - The first group of asylum seekers due to be deported to Malaysia
have called for help and are starting a hunger strike, refugee advocates say.
The initial boatload of asylum seekers to be processed under the Gillard government's
swap deal between Canberra and Kuala Lumpur arrived on Christmas island on Thursday.
It includes 18 minors or people claiming to be minors. Up to 14 of them are unaccompanied.
Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said advocates received a distress call
from one of the asylum seekers on Friday.
"The short call said only, `We are in a bad way; we need help. We are starting a hunger
strike'," Mr Rintoul said on Friday.
He called on the federal government to give the group access to lawyers.
"The cry for help is clear enough. If the government has nothing to hide, then it will
allow lawyers to contact them," he said.
"The asylum seekers have committed no crime but are effectively being held incommunicado.
"The abuse of their human rights has started even before they have been sent to Malaysia."

NSW: Body found on bridge not involved in car accident: Police
SYDNEY, April 4 AAP - A woman found dead in the middle of Sydney's Iron Cove Bridge
on Sunday morning does not appear to have been the victim of a car accident, police say.
A police spokeswoman told AAP detectives have ruled out a car crash following further
investigation of the scene.
"The woman's injuries do not appear to have been consistent with being hit by a car,"
the spokeswoman said.
The body of the woman, who has yet to be identified, was found on the city-bound lane
of the bridge about 2.20am (AEST).
Police initially thought she may have been hit by a car while walking or cycling across
the bridge.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out in the coming days to establish a cause of death.
The bridge has now been re-opened to all traffic.

Fed: Swine flu vaccines to go ahead despite easing threat
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - Australia's plan to tackle swine flu with vaccinations will go
ahead even though the epidemic may be easing, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.
Mr Rudd answered a barrage of questions on healthcare reform on Friday from clinicians
at Nepean Hospital in Sydney's west.
A number of doctors told him that surgeons were going for days without any scheduled
elective surgeries because hospital beds were not available for their patients.
After the question and answer session, Mr Rudd was asked about the view of some doctors
that the swine flu outbreak might be diminishing and the vaccination program might not
be necessary.
Mr Rudd said the government relied on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, Jim
Bishop, in the decision to go ahead with the vaccinations.
"I'm not in the business of indicating what should or should not be done in terms of
the provision and the deployment of vaccines for swine flu," he said.
Mr Rudd said federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and Mr Bishop were always in discussion
about how to balance the battle against swine flu and the daily needs of hospitals and
their patients.
He was not across those discussions, he said, but he expected Ms Roxon to respond to
any recommendations by Mr Bishop.
"I'm always very determined that we should act on the basis of the best clinical advice
about what's necessary," Mr Rudd said.

QLD: Queensland's jobless rate set to rise
BRISBANE, Dec 8 AAP - Unemployment in Queensland is set to rise, the state government
has confirmed as it prepares to release its mini-budget.
Treasurer Andrew Fraser is expected to announce a deficit in Tuesday's mini-budget,
instead of the $809 million operating surplus forecast for 2008/09 in the June budget,
as the slowing housing market and economic downturn slash revenues.
Mr Fraser said on Monday the Queensland economy would be impacted by the global economic
crisis and unemployment would be a key policy focus for 2009.
The government had forecast the unemployment rate to remain at a 34-year low of 3.75
per cent in the budget, but Mr Fraser said it was now expected to rise to 4.25 per cent
in 2008/09.
"The start of 2009 will be a very difficult time for economies around the globe and
we don't expect to escape that challenge," Mr Fraser told ABC Radio on Monday.
"The big policy task for 2009 will be fighting off unemployment.
"The forecast now is that unemployment will rise over the financial year to 4.25 per cent.
"That's still well below the national forecast of five per cent."
To combat the loss of jobs, Mr Fraser said $3 million would be given to Lifeline to
provide financial counselling and an assistance fund to retrain workers who lose their
jobs would be doubled to $10 million.
A further $20 million will be spent on ensuring industrial apprentices and trainees
who face being laid off can complete their training plus $25 million on creating jobs
in mining communities.
At least $200 million in cuts to public service spending will be made in the mini-budget.
Mr Fraser has also guaranteed the $17 billion capital works program would be quarantined
from any cuts.

ACT: Man nabbed by cops after flag stolen from police memorial
CANBERRA, Aug 4 AAP - A young man who planned to hang an Australian flag stolen from
the National Police Memorial on his bedroom wall was nabbed after police spotted the flag
in his car, an ACT court has heard.
Damien John Lakin, from Canberra, had disrespected a "sacred" symbol, the ACT Magistrates
Court was told today.
The 18-year-old was arrested by police on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in June
after they spotted the flag - which had been stolen on the Saturday night - in the back
of his car the next day.
The flag had been donated to the memorial - which commemorates officers killed while
on duty - just a month previously.
Lakin had attended a number of parties on Saturday June 7 and an unknown person had
stolen the flag and then left it the rear of his car, the court heard.
His lawyer said it was "a classic case of being in the wrong place when somebody else
does the wrong thing".
During a police interview Lakin said he knew the flag was stolen but he intended to
keep it and hang it on his bedroom wall.
In recording a conviction on one charge of receiving stolen property, Magistrate Beth
Campbell said Lakin's involvement in the "stupid prank" was serious and would be seen
by many as a sign of disrespect.
"The Australian flag ... is regarded as quite sacred by people in the community," the
magistrate said.
Lakin was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

FED: More spending does not equal smarter students: report
SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - Teenagers' reading and maths skills have declined during the past
four decades despite education spending per student more than doubling, a new study has
found.
The study by Australian National University economists suggests today's 14-year-olds
are, in learning terms, about three months behind their counterparts from the 1960s.
The researchers from ANU's Research School of Social Sciences suggest the piling of
resources into creating smaller classes, at the expense of paying more for better teachers,
could be to blame.
Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard said the government's national action plan
for numeracy and literacy would address the shortfall.
"The Rudd government understands that literacy and numeracy skills are the building
blocks of a good education," Ms Gillard told The Australian.
Opposition education spokesman Tony Smith said the report, released yesterday, highlighted
why "a real education revolution needs to be more than delivering computers in boxes to
schools".
Report researcher Andrew Leigh said the findings suggested the boost to school funding
over the past 40 years had been misdirected.
"There's a whole lot more money put into Australian schools and we don't seem to be
getting more out of them in terms of literacy and numeracy," Dr Leigh told The Australian.

NSW: Water quality for Sydney's west will be improved: Howard
SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Water quality in the Hawkesbury-Nepean river system will be improved
with a $132.5 million grant from the federal government, Prime Minister John Howard says.
Mr Howard and Environment and Water Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the plan - part
of the federal government's $10 billion national water program - should be supplemented
by assistance from the NSW government.
The money will go to cleaning up the water by improving sewage discharges at three
treatment plants below the Warragamba Dam.
The plan is aimed at improving storm-water management and the management of agricultural
and open-space irrigation systems.
Mr Howard urged the NSW government to back the plan for the good of the state, western
Sydney residents and users of the river.
"I'm told the amount to be contributed by the state government ... we're asking only
something in the order like five to ten million," he told reporters.
"As soon as we can get the plans agreed by the NSW government we can start."
Mr Howard was flanked by western Sydney Liberal MPs at the Nepean Rowing Club Penrith,
in Sydney's western suburbs.

Fed: Howard could topple Menzies' record: Turnbull
CANBERRA, July 31 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard could equal Robert Menzies' record
16 consecutive years in the nation's top job, says high-profile Liberal MP Malcolm Turnbull.
Mr Howard today ended weeks of speculation by announcing he would seek a fifth term
in office at the 2007 election, dashing the leadership hopes of his treasurer, Peter Costello.
Mr Turnbull tonight said it was possible Mr Howard could match the longevity of his
political hero, Sir Robert, who led the nation from 1939 to 1941 before his record stint
of just over 16 years between 1949 and 1966.
"It's not inconceivable," Mr Turnbull told ABC television. "It's a matter for him and
the party room ... and that will be a function of his performance.
"You have to hand it to the prime minister - he is as energetic intellectually and
physically today as he was when he became prime minister in 1996."
Mr Turnbull said he was glad Mr Howard had chosen to stay on and fight the 2007 poll
with Mr Costello as his deputy.
"They've been a phenomenally successful team as prime minister and treasurer for 10
years, delivering Australia great prosperity," he said. "That's a winning team and the
party and the community hope that they would be able to continue to work together."
Mr Turnbull deflected questions about his own leadership ambitions.
"I live in the here and now, I'm not a long-term plotter and schemer," he said. "I've
found over the years -- and I'm no spring chicken -- that if you do the job at hand well,
the future looks after itself."

Yahoo! reiterates commitment to MENA region's online growth.(ACROSS THE REGION)
The combination of rapid user growth and an attractive advertising market has made the Middle East one of the most exciting markets for Yahoo!, according to Carol Bartz, chief executive officer of Yahoo! Inc., on a visit to Dubai.
On her first visit to Dubai as the company's CEO, Bartz held discussions with senior management representatives of Dubai Internet City, part of TECOM Investments, highlighting the global technology major's key role in the creation of Arabic online content, products and advertising.
Bartz said, "Yahoo! is committed to the MENA region as it is one of the fastest growing markets in the world with 70 million online users and 50 million more estimated to come in within the next two to three years. In spite of Arabic being one of the fastest growing languages, only one percent of online content is in Arabic today. Therefore, part of Yahoo!'s investments in the Middle East and North Africa region is to facilitate Arabic language's online growth.
Yahoo! plans to continue expanding in the region, and the company has already established content deals with some of the region's media majors, including Al Jazeera, BBC, Reuters, and Saudi Publishing and Research Company. The region also hosts the fastest-growing advertising market in the world, and year-on-year, the average growth for digital spend is around 25 percent to 30 percent of total ad spend. Yahoo! foresees the online ad market in MENA to reach up to 7 percent of the total ad spend by 2015.
Malek Al Malek, managing director at Dubai Internet City and Dubai Outsource Zone, said, "Online Arabic content has recently witnessed a rising trend buoyed by the increasing interest of regional and global players to gain a foothold in the region. DIC has always encouraged and supported the development of local content in Arabic and content developers in the region. The visit of the CEO of Yahoo!'s global operations signifies the importance of this region and its potential in the long run.
Yahoo! acquired Maktoob in November 2008 and since then has invested in fully staffed offices in Dubai, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, and Casablanca. There are approximately 300 employees in these offices, working in editorial, engineering, sales, marketing, and customer care divisions.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 03, 2011
Circumstances similar to those events faced by the founders of our Nation prior to 1776 confront our Nation once again: a weakened economy, dependency on foreign resources, threats from foreign shores, and the lack of domestic unity and reliable infrastructure. Innovative resources and the American Spirit must be summoned as before to "right the ship".
All American Markets, dba MOPAC Plant and Building Services, for the past 31 years has protected and preserved the physical assets of global corporations with world-class facilities located throughout the southeastern United States. Application of high performance, advanced technology by MOPAC has assured long-term performance, reliability and competitive advantage for the owners of these industrial and commercial facilities. Lowest life-cycle costs are generated with the bundling of facility services. Key performance indicators measure and monitor progress based upon performance data compiled by MAPS[TM], the MOPAC computerized facility maintenance system. MOPAC introduced MAPS[TM] to the European manufacturing and engineering community at the 10th International Symposium on Corrosion, in Helsinki, Finland.
Problems -- Escalation of Costs, Competitive Disadvantage, and Unemployment
Volatility in the cost of energy, the loss of manufacturing base, and reduction in the availability of traditional resources have combined to weaken our economy and our capability to compete in global markets.

Localizing E-Verify: The Tennessee Lawful Employment Act Of 2011.
In an effort to cope with the void left by the federal government's failure to curb illegal immigration, Tennessee has joined the ranks of 15 other states that have enacted "get tough" immigration-related legislation aimed at stricter enforcement of immigration laws within their state borders by requiring public and private employers to enroll and participate in the E-Verify program to verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees.1
Signed into law by Governor Haslam on June 7, 2011, the Tennessee Lawful Employment Act ("the Act") requires all employers in Tennessee to demonstrate that they are hiring and maintaining a legal workforce either by:
Enrolling and verifying the employment eligibility of all newly hired employees through the E-Verify program,2 or
Requesting all newly hired employees to provide one of the following identity and employment authorization documents3:
A valid Tennessee driver's license or photo identification
A valid driver's license or photo identification from another state where the license requirements are at least as strict as those in Tennessee
A birth certificate issued by a U.S. state, jurisdiction or territory
A U.S. government issued certified birth certificate
A valid, unexpired U.S. passport
A U.S. certificate of birth abroad
A certificate of citizenship
A certificate of naturalization
A U.S. citizen identification card
A lawful permanent resident card
Other proof of employee's immigration status and authorization to work in the United States
Under the Act, the employment verification provisions referenced above will be phased in as follows:
All state and local government agencies must enroll and participate in E-Verify or request and maintain an identity/employment authorization document from a newly hired employee no later than January 1, 2012
All private employers with 500 or more employees must enroll and participate in E-Verify or request and maintain an identity / employment authorization document from a newly hired employee no later than January 1, 2012
All private employers with 200 to 499 employees must enroll and participate in E-Verify or request and maintain an identity / employment authorization document from a newly hired employee no later than July 1, 2012
All private employers with 6 to 199 employees must register and utilize E-Verify or request and maintain an identity / employment authorization document from a newly hired employee no later than July 1, 2013
The requirement that employers enroll and participate in E-Verify or request and maintain an identity / employment authorization document does not appear to make a distinction between in-state and out-of-state employers, and it is unclear whether the Act requires an employer with operations in multiple states to utilize E-Verify to confirm the employment eligibility of all of the employer's workers or only the employees in Tennessee. Arguably, if the E-Verify provisions of the Act were limited to newly hired employees in Tennessee only, the Act could potentially provide an unfair competitive advantage to employers located outside of Tennessee by incentivizing those employers to relocate their business(es) to a state that does not require enrollment and participation in E-Verify.
It is also unclear from the language of the Act whether employees working outside of Tennessee are counted as part of the total number of employees for purposes of determining the law's effective date for private employers. For example, if a Tennessee employer has 600 employees, but only 150 employees work in Tennessee, would the employer be phased in and subject to the Act on January 1, 2012 or July 1, 2013?
For employers without Internet access, the Act allows such employers to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and permits this agency to enroll the employer in the E-Verify program and conduct employment verification checks of newly hired employees through E-Verify on behalf of the employer. An employer who has requested this service from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, but has not received assistance will not be in violation of the Act. Alternatively, the Act allows employers to utilize the services of a third party agent to conduct the E-verification process for newly hired employees.
Under the Act, employers must maintain a record of results generated by E-Verify for three years from the date of hire or one year from the date of termination, whichever is later. Employers who elect to verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees by requesting an identity and employment authorization document, rather than enroll in E-Verify, must retain this documentation for three years after the documentation is received or for one year after the employee (or non-employee, whichever is the case) stops providing services or labor, whichever is earlier.
Any lawful resident of Tennessee or any employee of a federal agency may file a complaint alleging a violation of the employment verification provisions of the Act. If there is satisfactory evidence of a violation, the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will conduct an investigation and issue an initial order, which will include:
The Commissioner's findings and determination
The penalties if a final order is issued
The process involved in requesting a contested hearing
The process by which the Commissioner will waive penalties for first-time offenders
An employer who is a first-time offender will be issued a warning if the employer complies with all remedial action requested by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and did not knowingly violate the employment verification provisions of the Act.
An employer who has been found to have violated the employment verification provisions of the Act will be assessed $500 for the first violation, $1,000 for a second violation and $2,500 for a third or subsequent violation. In addition to these civil penalties, first-time offenders will also be assessed an additional $500 for each employee or non-employee who was not verified through the E-Verify program or for whom an identity / employment authorization document was not requested. For second and third violations, employers will be fined an additional $1,000 or $2,500, respectively, for each employee or non-employee.
An employer who fails to submit evidence of compliance with the employment verification provisions of the Act, within 60 days of a final order, will have its business license suspended until the employer remedies the violation. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will also post a publicly available list on its website of any employer against whom a final order has been issued.
Lastly, the Act authorizes the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development to promulgate rules and regulations to put into effect and enforce the employment verification provisions of the Act.
As the immigration landscape becomes increasingly enforcement-driven, employers must align their worksite compliance strategy with the various state immigration laws currently in effect in the state(s) in which they operate. Between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's increased enforcement initiatives and the one-two punch of new state and local immigration laws, employers in Tennessee will face the daunting task of trying to comply with a growing patchwork of policies and federal, state and local laws aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
Footnotes
1. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, in the first quarter of 2011, state legislators in the 50 states and Puerto Rico introduced 1,538 bills and resolutions relating to immigration. This number surpassed the first quarter of 2010, when 1,180 bills were introduced.
2. E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that allows employers to verify the employment eligibility of their employees, regardless of citizenship. Based on the information provided by the employee on his or her Form I-9, E-Verify checks this information electronically against records contained in DHS and Social Security Administration (SSA) databases. E-Verify is currently voluntary for all employers with very limited exceptions.
3. For non-employees, such as independent contractors, the Act also requires employers to request an identity and/or employment authorization document.

BIPARTISAN BILL PROTECTS CHILDREN FROM SEXUAL EXPLOITATION.
WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the office of Texas Rep. Lamar Smith:
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) today introduced legislation to help investigators track down dangerous pedophiles and protect children from sexual exploitation.
The "Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011" (H.R. 1981) directs Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to retain subscriber information for up to 18 months in order to assist federal law enforcement in online child pornography and child exploitation investigations. H.R. 1981 also makes it a federal crime to financially facilitate the sale, distribution and purchase of child pornography. The bill increases the maximum penalty for certain child pornography offenses.
Chairman Smith: "Child pornography is one of the fastest growing crimes in America, increasing an average of 150% per year. This is partly because investigators do not have adequate tools to track down dangerous pedophiles that prey on the most innocent in our society.
"Investigators need the assistance of Internet Service Providers to identify users and distributers of online child pornography. This bill requires ISPs to retain subscriber records, similar to records retained by telephone companies, to aid law enforcement officials in their fight against child sexual exploitation.
"When investigators develop leads that might result in saving a child or apprehending a pedophile, their efforts should not be frustrated because vital records were destroyed simply because there was no requirement to retain them. Every piece of prematurely discarded information could be the footprint of a child predator. This bill ensures that the online footprints of predators are not erased."
Rep. Wasserman Schultz: "I am proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation with Chairman Lamar Smith, who shares my dedication to the safety of our nation's children.
"Too many times, law enforcement hits a dead end when tracking a child pornographer because the digital fingerprints linking them to the crime have been erased. When this happens, it all too often means that a child will continue to be violated by an adult. This bill will ensure that officers of the law have the information they need to identify and apprehend those who abuse and violate children.
"We must make it clear that no longer will these predators be allowed to hide behind a computer terminal and continue to violate children, whether through uploading pictures or broadcasting real-time assault.
"I was pleased to learn that many ISPs already retain these records solely for law enforcement use in these cases, and many children's lives have been saved because of it. This bill will extend what has already been proven to work to all ISPs, and will ensure that no child will continue to be violated because the perpetrator's digital fingerprints were erased."
bin waiting long time for justice.
SO bin Laden wasn't in a cave in Afghanistan after all.
The world's most wanted was living a life of domesticity in a walled compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan, his wives and children by his side.
He was based in a good neighbourhood, in a district favoured by retired military men.
And the only thing that set his home apart from the rest of the houses on the block was that if you hit a cricket ball into his garden, the ball didn't come back.
Yet while those who lived in his street had retired from their jobs, there is nothing to suggest that bin Laden had retired from his business: the business of global terrorism.
He was one of the world's most infamous men, yet there was a mythical quality about this 21st century man of mystery.
Bin Laden was, until last Monday, a living, breathing paradox.
His long robes and traditional beard made him seem timeless -- ageless, even. Yet we know he was a 54-year-old family man with at least five wives and more than 20 children.
For many he was the personification of evil yet, possibly because of this, he was also the object of jokes.
And despite being a leader of a global terror group who communicated with followers via the internet when he chose to, he lived his life off the grid.
In death, as in life, mystery surrounds Osama bin Laden.
There are the conspiracy theorists who say he has been dead for many years and that al-Qaida itself does not exist.
Prominent figures, from Ian Paisley to the Dalai Lama have given their opinions on the assassination, debating the morality of the killing.
But by far the most straightforward response to the news came from ex-newspaper editor turned American sweetheart Piers Morgan who tweeted: "Things you'd love to tell the grand-children: I'm the Seal who killed bin Laden."
Last week young Americans took to the streets to celebrate bin Laden's death at that Seal's hand.
For them, it was a real life 'wicked witch is dead' moment.
But while the wicked bin Laden is dead, there are others willing to fill his shoes.
Now America -- and the rest of the western world -- must brace itself for their retribution.

Problem solved.(NetMarketing)
Web site: Problem: Making Web site more credible to visitors.
Solution: When potential customers are looking to establish a relationship on the Internet, credibility is a major factor in their decision. Big companies are very effective at creating powerful brands and name recognition by investing in marketing practices. While the Internet certainly allows small entrepreneurs and midsize companies to compete side by side with the big multinational companies, smaller players need to work harder to establish that sense of trust. So what can you do to accomplish this?
Design: The first thing visitors see when they visit your site is the design. If your site looks old and dated, you could lose a lot of credibility. Make sure your design is up-to-date for your industry.
Reviews: Third-party endorsements in the form of testimonials and media coverage from industry publications can go a long way to establish credibility.
Awards: Web site awards are also very good for your credibility. When a visitor sees a logo from a well known award program, they know the site has been reviewed and meets a certain level of standards.
Search engine rankings: Not only will high placement in the search engines drive traffic to your site, it will add credibility as well. Conversely, not being listed in a search result for an important keyword-like your company name-can damage your image.
Page rank: Google PageRank is an algorithm Google uses for ranking Web pages based on the number of incoming links and their importance. A PageRank toolbar can give visitors a quick indication of how Google views the page. If your site does not have a PageRank or it is below 5, invest in search engine optimization to help improve your scores.
William Rice is president of the Web Marketing Association and has judged Web sites as part of the annual WebAward competition (www.webaward.org) for more than a decade.
Search: Problem: Convincing senior management that SEO/SEM is a good investment.
Solution: Search marketing has proven to be a profitable investment for many companies-probably including a few of your competitors-yet some senior managers are still hesitant to move advertising dollars in that direction. Below is a list of the top five killer value propositions any marketer could use to pitch SEO/SEM to senior management.
1) Return on investment in SEM is 100% "trackable.'' Search engine marketing is unique for its sciencelike precision in acquisition tracking. Most desired conversion events can be tracked by a free Web analytics solution such as Google Analytics or by a more comprehensive tracking system such as Omniture. Return on search advertising investment is reflected in X number of prospects visiting your site and Y number of sales generated as a result. No offline channel offers the granularity of data available in search campaigns, which allows for ongoing optimization and constant campaign efficiency improvements.
2) It's a relatively small investment. Upfront costs associated with paid search advertising are relatively low compared to those of offline campaigns. Plus, the information derived from a test search campaign could serve as a solid projection baseline for a full-scale campaign involving SEO and paid search.
3) It works for brand awareness and customer education. Search engine marketing-whether paid search or organic optimization-generates targeted impressions. Your brand is displayed to thousands of Internet users and serves as a great product/service branding vehicle. Additionally, bottom-line cost-per-thousand rates compared to offline channel counterparts could be substantially lower at times.
4) It helps with market discovery. Larger companies often engage in market research and market discovery through search engine marketing. Low costs associated with research, set up and execution of test campaigns prove to be priceless for brands looking to branch out. Whether your company is testing a new marketing angle or you're trying to hit a new demographic, precision of search marketing could help.
5) Your competitors are doing it. This often proves to be one of the most compelling arguments. If the "800-pound gorilla'' in your niche is fully engaged in search advertising, there is no reason why you should be left behind. Convincing, free competitor intel is available on Web sites such as Quantcast.com to demonstrate your point.

Mondays Close: Wall Street stumbled lower Monday as growing concerns over technology companies led jittery investors to pull money out of the market ahead of this week's earnings reports. The market has been vulnerable to erratic trading lately, with investors cautious about the direction of the economy and companies' results. The tech sector so far has been knocked down the most, after Apple Inc.'s and Intel Corp.'s outlooks last week fell below the Street's expectations. With industry leaders like Qualcomm Inc. and Microsoft Corp. releasing their financial results later this week, many investors are bracing for disappointment.

The boy who wants to take a big bite out of Apple; He's the 22-year-old dotcom millionaire who has made one of the world's computer giants very, very angry. As he seeks a judicial review, Benjamin Cohen on why he's not backing down.
Byline: DAVID COHEN
OH GOD, we're under attack!" exclaims Benjamin Cohen, still in his pyjamas, as he hunches over his computer outside his bedroom in Hackney.
"Some nutter claiming to be a Mac revenge-God has hacked into our system.
He's trying to shut down our website, to punish me for my fight with Apple."
An hour later, having successfully fought off the amateur hacker, Benjamin Cohen, 22, the internet whiz-kid who became a teenage millionaire sensation when he founded the website SoJewish.com, emerges - now dressed in jeans and socks - to discuss his real war, with computer giant Apple.
This week, Cohen is launching a High Court battle against Apple to try to overturn a ruling that would see him lose ownership of a website address - itunes.co.uk - that he innocently acquired in November 2000. He describes how Apple's Chicago-based lawyers, Baker & McKenzie, put the squeeze on him when they called him out of the blue in November last year, and demanded that he surrender the itunes.co.uk domain name. Apple had launched iTunes in the UK in June.
"Apple offered me a miserly $5,000 [[pounds sterling]2,680] for the address, but negotiations broke down when I argued it was worth between [pounds sterling]50,000 and [pounds sterling]100,000," says Cohen. The dispute was referred to Nominet, the registry for UK internet names, which this month ruled in Apple's favour that Cohen should hand back the disputed name.
But Cohen, showing characteristic grit, is refusing to give in. "I am applying to the High Court for a judicial review of the dispute with Apple. I feel the procedure Nominet uses to settle disputes is biased against small companies. It's not just about the money any more. It's the principle. I'm standing up for the little guy."
Indeed, at just 5ft 5in tall, Cohen is quite literally the little guy.
Hailed as Britain's first self-made teenage millionaire, he was still at school - his teeth in braces - when his innovative-SoJewish website was valued at [pounds sterling]5 million. He would later also launch the more controversial website, Hunt4Porn.com, Europe's first and largest "adult" search engine.
But it was when he was just 16 that Cohen suddenly found himself hailed by the media as "the American Dream slap bang in the middle of Kentish Town" and was whisked off for a private audience with Prince Charles at St James's Palace.
He was still at school when a limousine arrived to take him to dine in the Royal Suite at Heathrow airport with Benjamin Netanyahu, the former Israeli Prime Minister, who had diverted his flight to London in order to discuss a business deal with Cohen.
"Suddenly I get a call to say that Netanyahu is interested in becoming chairman of my company. I passed on it, thank you very much, but the best bit," he laughs, "was that Netanyahu thought my dad was my driver."
Those were heady days, but the five years since have been a rollercoaster, in which Cohen lost his millions in the internet bust but then gradually rebuilt his fortune, he says, to just over [pounds sterling]1 million today.
It's hard to believe that the fellow is still just 22. What has he learned?
"At heart," Cohen grins boyishly, biting his nails like a nervous teenager, "I'm a clean-living Jewish boy from a typically neurotic Jewish family. My mother phones me at least four times a day to see I'm all right."
Cohen grew up in Elstree, north London, the eldest of three children to middleclass parents, Richard and Rochelle.
His entrepreneurial streak is inherited from both sides of the family, he says.
His maternal grandfather was the MD of Ladbrokes, and his other great influence is his father, a successful solicitor and CEO of a software company.
AGED five, Cohen set up a stall in front of his house where he sold lollipops, bought with his pocket money, turning a 20p profit. At seven, he printed a crude leaflet flogging "cut-price mops" which he stuffed into letters his father sent to clients about their wills.
But it was when he fell ill - with glandular fever - and was confined to bed with ME, the chronic fatigue illness known as "yuppie flu", that paradoxically his life began to take off. He spotted a yawning gap in the market for a Jewish listings website, and the idea of SoJewish was born.
Returning to do his A-levels at the Jews Free School, then based in Camden, Cohen tested his fledgling SoJewish idea on his classmates.
"They thought it was crap," he says, "but that only made me more determined to prove them wrong."
It cost him [pounds sterling]150 to set up SoJewish, which he modelled on a website targeting the Asian community. He offered listings of kosher restaurants and synagogues, a dating service and religious advice penned by a local rabbi.
"It took off immediately through word of mouth. We had two million hits in seven months. One day, my father got a call from The Jewish Chronicle. They wanted to know who was behind this amazing website that was getting more traffic than their own newspaper. When it came out that it was run by a teenager from his north London bedroom, and that a City investment bank was looking to float the company for [pounds sterling]5 million, I was deluged. The next day I had every national newspaper at my doorstep."
Trevor McDonald's ITV Tonight crew arrived to film him at school, while the BBC followed him for eight months for their Trouble at the Top series. "Back then, I was obnoxious and rude, especially to journalists who tried to offer advice. I thought I was really a big deal. And I was - I was Ben Cohen, the dotcom sensation."
At school, his friends began to pester him for loans. But the truth was that SoJewish, a free site, hadn't yet earned Cohen a penny in hard cash.
Before he was out of his teens, his company had merged with the London
Jewish News (a free Jewish newspaper) and was subsequently reversed into Totally plc. For a few days, Cohen was the youngest-ever UK director of a publicly quoted company and his shares were worth [pounds sterling]310,000. But by the time he was allowed to sell them a year later, the internet sector had collapsed and he recouped just [pounds sterling]40,000.
Cohen used it to make a downpayment on his Hackney flat. He also set about rethinking the strategy of his newly formed private company, CyberBritain, focusing on ideas that generated revenue. In the meantime, he built up a small property portfolio worth [pounds sterling]500,000, he says, and completed a BA in philosophy and ethics at Kings College, London.
His newfound interest in ethics caused a dilemma. He had launched Hunt4Porn.
com, Europe's largest "adult" search engine, which attracted 15 million hits a month. "I had a choice - I could have made a packet, but that meant using it to sell porn. I didn't want to be tarred as a porn baron, so I sold the site, undeveloped, for just [pounds sterling]25,000."
Cohen's latest business idea, the online shopping venture Quick-Quid.com, which offers "cash-back" discounts to internet shoppers, was launched five months ago. He hopes it will make him [pounds sterling]2 million a year.
But, for now, he has his spat with Apple to concentrate his mind.
Cohen says that when he registered the domain name, itunes.co.uk (i for internet) to house a music internet business he was developing in November 2000, Apple hadn't invented the iPod. "I wasn't to know it would become the biggest-selling brand of 2005."
Apple, which has declined to comment for this article, boasts sales of more than 100 million songs worldwide through their virtual iTunes Music Store. It is irked that visitors who type in itunes.co.uk - instead of iTunes.com - get forwarded to Cohen's online shopping company, losing Apple business.
"Apple made a bad business mistake - it launched a brand without securing all the internet addresses.
Now it's trying to push me around.
"I've learned that I'm not motivated by money. I love to innovate. And to prove people wrong. I want to show that a multinational can't do whatever it wants."
Those in the know say Cohen is as determined as they come - and definitely one to watch. Or as Apple might ruefully reflect, one to keep an i on.
