Study backs safety of male infertility treatment

An infertility treatment in which a woman's egg is injected witha single sperm cell in a laboratory dish works as well as standardin-vitro fertilization and causes no higher rate of birth defects, astudy found.

The treatment, used to overcome male infertility, was developedin Belgium and has been increasingly popular since it was introducedin this country in 1993. But questions have lingered over whether itincreases the incidence of birth defects.

In a new study involving hundreds of births, women who took partin the procedure conceived and delivered babies in 38.7 percent ofcases after a single attempt - about the same rate seen in standardin-vitro …
