Vic: Green Corps plants 2.4 million trees

Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says Green Corps members have planted 2.4 million
trees, constructed 350 kilometres of walking tracks and removed weeds from 23,000 hectares
of land in the scheme's first three years.

He says the environmental works program for the unemployed has also collected 2.7 million
tonnes of native seed, completed more than 1,700 environmental surveys, and constructed
800kms of fencing.

The Green Corps latest project is a vegetation restoration along part of the original
south bank of Melbourne's Yarra River.

Mr COSTELLO says the Green Corps scheme has given participants valuable skills, and
provided tangible benefits for the community.

He says 67 per cent of Green Corps participants have gone on to work or further study,
mainly in environmental management courses.
